Removable Glass

For all book cradle users (Book Cradle models 20, 30 or 50), the removable glass panel is essential in the following situations:

  • digitization of small thick books which generally have a very rigid binding and which tend to close naturally or spread their pages out in the form of a fan,
  • digitizing inserts - documents inserted onto one page - which need to be unfolded and flattened,
  • minimizing physical contact with the operator.

From a conservation perspective, the removable glass panel allows pages to be kept out of direct contact with the operator.

The removable glass panel covers a landscape A2 format (2 x A3): 420 mm (h) x 594 mm (l). The removable glass panel is compatible with the scanner's bi-directional scanning mode.

The removable glass panel fits all scanners in the SUPRASCAN range, as well as the DigiBook 2000LC model. In the case of the A0 scanner (DigiBook A0), a special mounting kit is needed to fix the glass directly on the Book Cradle 20, 30 or 50 (GLASS-KIT A0).

Operation:

With the scanner arm in rest position, on either the left or right side (see image 1), the entire glass panel device is accessible to the operator, who can maneuver the panel (opening or closing it) using a handle located on the front. Opening the glass panel to approximately 60° allows the book to be properly positioned on the plates of the book cradle and its pages to be turned. The operator lowers the glass panel to the horizontal position (refer to image 2) to flatten the pages to be scanned. At that point, the digitization operation can begin.

The advantages of the removable glass panel:

  • No crushing of the book

  • The glass panel pivots about an adjustable hinge (with a vertical range of approximately 30 mm) which takes into account variations in the height of the work and prevents it from being crushed when the operator lowers the glass panel. It is the weight of the glass panel alone that flattens the pages of the book.

  • No reflections caused by the light source

  • When the glass panel is placed on the book, it remains in a perfectly horizontal plane so as to prevent the formation of reflections caused by the light source.

  • Glass panel stays in raised position without assistance

  • The operator is free to optimally position the work between digitization operations.

  • Automatic detection of the opening of the glass panel

  • Once the glass panel is raised by a few degrees, a detector built into the hinge sends a stop signal to the scanner which immediately halts digitization.

  • High-quality glass

  • The materials used in the glass panel have been carefully selected to guarantee perfect digitization: optimal transparence for maximal light transmission, color conservation (no tinting, no color filtering) and minimal deformation of the image through the use of highly homogenous glass.
